Interventional Radiology, or sometimes referred to as Special Procedures, is a medical specialty that uses image-guided, minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic techniques that, in some cases, are an alternative to conventional surgery. Interventional radiology procedures often involve the use of small catheters (tubes) or other devices, inserted through the skin via a very small incision or needle puncture, and guided by radiologic imaging methods. Interventional radiology procedures are less costly and traumatic to the patient than traditional surgery, and typically result in shorter recovery times. These procedures are performed by specialty trained radiologists and assisted by highly skilled technologists.
Interventional Radiology consists of a broad range of exams performed by specially trained Radiologists. Some of the exams include, but are not limited to: angiography, port and PICC line placement, nephrostomy tube insertion and ureteral stent placement, varicose vein treatments, and biospsies of the body, just to name a few. Please refer to our specialized services area or give us a call for our complete list.
CT, Ultra Sound, general X-Ray, and fluoroscopy are all commonly used in Interventional Radiology depending on the specific exam and guidance system needed. During the scheduling process, you will be notified of the modality to be used.
Please refer to specialized services area or give us a call as each exam has its own set of benefits vs. risks.
We take pride in keeping our patients as comfortable as possible. Before your procedure, everything will be explained and any questions or concerns will be addressed. During your procedure, you will be given a local anesthetic to "numb" the area. You also may be given a mild sedative to help with nerves. Afterwards, you will be given post instructions including numbers to call if any problems or questions may arise.
Preparation is exam specific and will be given during scheduling or nurses prescreening call.
All biopsies are sent to a specific lab depending on the insurance. All results will be given by the referring physician.
Ultrasound guided biopsies can be done at any of our 5 locations and we have our Interventional Radiology departments at two convenient locations; in the North West at 2767 N.Tenaya Way and in the heart of the city, located at 2950 South Maryland Parkway. Your refferal can be faxed from your physician's off ice to 702-794-3607 for our Maryland Parkway office or to 702-240-1276 for our North West Facility.
