Breast MRI

Used to detect breast cancer, abnormalities in the breast or implant integrity. MRI captures multiple images to create a detailed picture.

For this procedure you will wear your gown open in the front and lie face down on an MRI table. Your breasts will be positioned into two holes with your arms above your head like superwoman.

For breast cancer detection:

Breast MRI for cancer detection is done with and without IV contrast. The radiologist will use your mammography images (so be sure to bring them if done somewhere other than SDMI) in conjunction with your MRI images to help diagnosis the presence of cancer.  These exams must be scheduled in coordination with your menstrual cycle to minimize the risk of a false positive. Please schedule between 5-15 days after the first day of your last menstrual period. If you don't have a cycle or have already been diagnosed with breast cancer you can schedule at any time.

For implant integrity:

Breast MRI for implants is done without IV contrast and can be scheduled at any time. Please be sure to bring any breast related images, done somewhere besides SDMI, such as ultrasound or mammogram, with you to your appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are the lights in the MRI room so bright?
arrow pointing down on sdmi lv website

Some MRI exams require an IV injection, it is important for our technologists to have good lighting to be able to start an IV. If the light is too bright and uncomfortable please alert your technologist. We have eye/sleep masks available, these masks also help with claustrophobia and you get to keep it after your exam.

Why is it so cold in the MRI room?

MRI Machines use very powerful magnets to achieve the highest quality images. These magnets produce heat and need to be kept cold to function properly. If you feel too cold during your exam please alert your technologist and they will be happy to provide you with a blanket.
